LA GUAJIRA, COLOMBIA
She is Beatriz. A native woman of the Wayuu Tribe and mother of eight children.
The weaving of Mochilas, chinchorros and others handmade items is part of her culture and subsistence.
Here Beatriz is making a Gasa.
- First she organize the thread along two wooden sticks and distributes colors,
- Then she crochets the threads that she needs to keep separated for weaving of the Gasa. She uses extra wooden sticks to separate the waving between rows.
- Once everything is set she start waving the Gasa Row by Row until the Gasa is ready.
This process can take hours or even days.
Gasas are usually used for Mochila Bags but also for other like the Beach Bags made of
Raffia, for Hats and many other Handcrafts.
